Those Zulus Sure Can Party

Our guide for our Zulu Land tour, Mandla, was kind enough to invite us to 2 birthday parties. One was at a house in a rather upscale township and was in a club in a "for real" township. The hospitality was incredible. We did not fall for the line that drinking shots of tequila upon being newcomers to the scene was a South African tradition, as was suggested to us, but who can turn down tequila among new Zulu friends. Pumping in the background like a heartbeat at both parties was, of all things, "house music". We thought we were back in Chicago in the '80s. It turns out house music has been all the rage in South Africa for the past 3 yrs or so. You should have seen our friends get down: young, old and ancient alike. It was fantastic.

The liquor flowed and so did the food. Pap, which is a maize staple that's similar to polenta and looks kinda like grits, a vegetable curry called Chakalaka and lots of Brie, which is grilled meats. On this night Brie included lamb, chicken and a sausage, which we think was Kudu. Kudu is this antelope-like animal, which we would later see on our game drive.

We would have liked to show you photos of DeChane being offered cows in exchange for her hand at both parties, but forgot to capture the moment on film then. The going rate is apparently 11 cows for a good woman, but we told them we would take nothing less than 20 cows for such a fine specimen as DeChane.
